Welcome to our LONG DELAYED MVMUA. We apologize for the long interruption in MVMUA - but we've all been very busy! (being busy in VM is a Good Thing)

It's a good time to catch up on some core VM topics including announcements for the entire VM platform. We have sessions from IBM on VM announcements, NFS, MQ, and and how to support the Year 2000 on VM.

Note that this is meeting 99 - with the next meeting we both have our 100th session and our 25th anniversary! One of the reasons to come to this meeting is for discussion of how to celebrate our anniversary. See you soon!

Jeff Savit, President

Session Times and Abstracts

10:00 AM - General Association Business
Chaired by: Jeff Savit (MLP)

The MVMUA Board of Directors will report on MVMUA activities and will entertain questions, suggestions, and comments from the members.

10:30 AM - VM/ESA Platform Update
Speakers: Reed Mullin, IBM

Come hear the latest developments on your favorite operating system. Recent VM system announcements and functional enhancements will be highlighted. This is a great session to get your "bear"ings on VM's new capabilities.

1:00 PM - Preparing Your VM Systems for Year 2000
Speaker: John Franciscovich, IBM

If you are preparing, planning, or in the process of making your VM systems Year 2000 ready, you will be interested in attending this session. An update of VM/ESA's Year 2000 support will be provided, as well as recommendations on how to go about your Year 2000 transition. Strategies for Year 2000 testing in a VM environment will be discussed, including tools which can aid with your testing.

2:30 PM - Enhancements to VM/ESA Network File System (NFS) Support
Speaker: Mary Ellen Carollo/Alan Altmark (IBM)

This presentation will cover recent enhancements to the VM/ESA NFS server Until recently, accessing files from an NFS client was limited to to accessing minidisk files. With the latest enhancements to NFS, you are also able to access files on a VM/ESA system residing in SFS and the Byte File System. Now, NFS clients have access to the full scope of files on a VM/ESA system, and with BFS in a file system structure much more familiar to UNIX and workstation platforms.

3:40 PM - MQSeries Client On VM/ESA
Speaker: Chuck Morse / Richard Lewis (IBM)

MQSeries is software that simplifies the task of connecting pieces of applications together, even when the pieces are running on completely different types of systems. Until recently, applications executing on VM/ESA were not able to take advantage of this method of program-to-program communication. This presentation will provide a brief overview of MQSeries along with how the client is implemented and used on VM/ESA.

4:45 PM - Problem roundtable
Chaired by: Martha McConaghy (MAR)

The roundtable offers a forum for members to ask questions and bring up problems pertaining to VM. Answers are often forthcoming from other members or the IBM MVMUA representatives.
